Fall 2024 •  Tuesday Blacksmithing  •  Ages 12-16  •  Tuesdays, September 10 - December 17, with breaks on the weeks of October 14-20 (for Earthskills Rendezvous) and November 25 - December 1(for Thanksgiving) [13 program days total]

 

Students gain a solid foundation in the art of creating useful tools by heating metal in the forge and shaping it on the anvil. Many techniques will be explored, and students will come home with beautiful and useful hand-made items.

 

All-Levels: With our low instructor to student ratio and experienced staff team, we’re able to work with students of varying skill levels.  Whether they're completely new to Blacksmithing or have joined us for several previously classes, all students will be appropriately challenged in further developing their skills.
 
Season Highlight Project:  Knives
This season's highlight project will have students apprenticing to the ages old craft of knife-making(amongst many other Blacksmithing skills). Knives are one of the most essential tools of any wilderness skills enthusiast, and nothing says "self-sufficiency" quite like your own handmade knife built from scratch.  Using a variety of both blacksmithing and metal shop tools, students will take what was an unremarkable hunk of steel and shape it into a beautiful and functional tool that will serve them the rest of their life.

  • Twisted Fork
  • Riveted Spoon
  • Riveted Spatula
  • Copper Finger Ring
  • Fire Poker
  • Chisel or Screwdriver
  • Knife crafted from a railroad spike
